Genesis robbed of top spot in Women's standings

Defending champions, University of the West Indies Women's Football Club have pulled themselves back into contention in the Barbados Football Association Women's Premier League after taking a win in their latest game. With hopes of retaining their title looking a bit dim at the beginning of the season, the UWI ladies knocked title-favourites, Guardian Group Kick Start Genesis off their flawless run by handing them their first loss of the season.

After losing to Kick Start, 3-2 from a 2-0 lead in their first game, UWI reaped revenge last night with a 2-0 result. Playing at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex, the scores remained locked at 0-0 at the half time break. However, that all changed in the 51st minute when Ashanee Thompson, who had been making advances all night, got the breakthrough to open the account for UWI.

Kick Start's Shanice Stevenson, who stormed to the top of the goals-race with six after just two games, was kept quiet all game long and offered very little to her team when they needed it. UWI extended their lead not too long after when Roxane Bradshaw added the second goal in the 72nd minute.

Novum Energy Mavericks Women hold pole position with 11 points after playing five games. They are the only unbeaten team left as they have won three and taken two draws in the other games. Genesis are still in second after taking the blow to their ego, but have 10 points from three wins and draw after missing out on the chance to go two-clear of Mavericks.

UWI are in at third with seven points from two wins, a draw and a loss. Empire Women are yet to get off the mark as they have no points to show after losing all four of their games. The National Sports Council Women's Football Team are fighting an uphill battle as they try to shake off a six-point deduction inherited at the beginning of the season. They have a single win which sees them on -3 points.

The league continues this coming Saturday with two games at the Wildey Turf. The National Sports Council have a chance to balance their books if they can manage a win over Empire at 6:00 PM. The nightcap game could very well decide the championship as UWI take on Mavericks at 8:00 PM.
