Road to Concacaf Gold Cup 2021

Category: | 0 Replies

The Bajan Tridents will face Guyana in their quest for qualification in the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup.

During the live draw at Concacaf’s headquarters in Miami Florida tonight, the senior team of the Barbados Football Association were paired with the Golden Jaguars for battle in March 2020.

Should they defeat them, the local lads move on to play Trinidad and Tobago in Round 2, scheduled to take place three months later in June 2020.

And Head Coach of the Tridents, Russell “The Little Magician” Latapy said they had one goal in mind.

“We are happy that we know who we are going to play. Our ambition is to go as far as we can and possibly qualify for the Gold Cup. We know after our last qualifying round that we have work to do to be better in some areas. We would put our heads down and work towards the result we want,” he said.

Barbados gained qualification into League B following their final game against the Cayman Islands Turtles last month where they defeated them 3-0 at the BFA’s Wildey Turf.

The 12 teams already securing their place in the 2021 Gold Cup are Canada, Costa Rica, Curacao, El Salvador, Grenada, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Suriname and the United States.

Next March, the second-place finishers of League B (French Guiana, Guyana, Montserrat and St Vincent and the Grenadines) will face the first-place finishers of League C (Bahamas, Barbados, Guadeloupe and Guatemala) with a two-round qualifier to be played in a direct elimination format.

After the home and away play, the four Round One match winners will advance to the second round, where they will face Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Bermuda and Cuba during the FIFA window of June 2020.

The draw was executed using a single blind system, involving three pots, with the 12 participating teams divided in alphabetical order into three pots.

Pot A: Bermuda, Cuba, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago

Pot B: French Guiana, Guyana, Montserrat and St Vincent and the Grenadines

Pot C: Bahamas, Barbados, Guadeloupe and Guatemala

Beginning by random selection of a team from Pot B, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Guyana, French Guiana and Montserrat were placed into respective rounds of matches one, two, three and four.

The procedure was replicated in Pot C and Guadeloupe was the first team pulled and paired with St Vincent and the Grenadines, followed by Barbados who will face Guyana, Bahamas will encounter French Guiana and finally, Guatemala is set to do battle with Montserrat.

For Pot A Haiti will face the winner of matchup number 1. If Barbados wins, they will face Trinidad and Tobago, Bermuda will face the winner of matchup number 3, while Cuba will face the winner of matchup number 4.
