Under-20s Fall To Puerto Rico 1-0

Category: | 0 Replies

Barbados’ Under-20 men’s national team campaign at the Concacaf’s Under-20 Men’s Championship may be over.

Yesterday, the young Tridents suffered a 1-0 defeat against Puerto Rico in their Group C encounter at the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium, in the Dominican Republic.

With a new lineup that included number one custodian Adam Mallalieu in for Justin Griffith, Zuhri Morris replacing an injured Kyle Blades-Forde, Kobe Hutson, and Tre Byer, the Tridents appeared up to the task at hand to keep their campaign alive.

However, that was short lived when Jan Mateo’s strike found the top of the nets, leaving the young Tridents stunned, and giving Puerto Rico the lead and the game.

The last time Barbados faced Puerto Rico in the same competition, the young Tridents emerged victorious with a 4-0 victory.

Even with the introduction of midfielder Nadre Butcher, Raequan Jones, Khimani Cox, Kemar John, and Adio Forde, the young Tridents could not find the back of the net, try as they might.

Hope piqued momentarily for the team when Morris thought he had earned a penalty, but referee Adonis Carrasco denied the call.

Following a later game in the same group, Bermuda defeated St Vincent and the Grenadines 3-0, catapulting them to the top of the table with six points. St Vincent and the Grenadines now stand in second place on three points, while Puerto Rico rounded into third on the same score. Barbados sits at the bottom of the table with zero points.

The young Tridents face St Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
